TotalEnergies launches “Action for Sustainability” campaign

TotalEnergies EP Uganda has unveiled a media campaign dubbed “Action for Sustainability” aimed at showcasing the various initiatives that the company is undertaking to ensure the sustainable development of Uganda’s oil and gas resources and conservation of the environment.

Two weeks ago, the campaign by some civil society organizations brough their campaign to a head when they secured a resolution by the EU Parliament calling for especially the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) to suspend its work to address environmental, human rights and other alleged issues. The anti-EACOP group cite environmental risks as their main reason of the challenging the oil pipeline project.

The media campaign therefore comes timely to showcase actions undertaken to ameliorate the environment, sustainability and governance issues around the entire downstream oil value chain in Uganda.

Philippe Groueix, the General Manager TotalEnergies EP Uganda said during the launch, “The Tilenga project is an onshore project located in a sensitive context both environmentally and socially. Our actions to date have been guided by the desire to achieve shared prosperity. As a result of this we undertake continuous consultations and dialogue with communities, stakeholders, and government. We aim to not only implement but also demonstrate the achievement of Net Positive Gain on the Tilenga project while adhering to the most stringent international requirements.”

According to TotalEnergies EP Uganda, since the start of their operations in Uganda, they have made the commitment to develop the project in a transparent, socially and environmentally friendly manner in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), hence the campaign theme “Action for Sustainability.”

The campaign that is expected to run for about two   months, will be broadcast on all mainstream information channels around the country.

The campaign is also expected to bring out the voices of the different implementation partners, project affected people and the communities.

“Through the campaign, the company will showcase the various initiatives and actions around the themes of Environment and Biodiversity conservation, Social and Human Rights, all of which have been undertaken in close collaboration with relevant Government authorities, communities as well as local and international CSOs and NGOS.” Groueix said.
