French oil giant, Total, has adopted a new name and identity, TotalEnergies,in a rebranding exercise that communicates the broadening of the scope of the company but also emphasises its move towards clean and renewable energies.

A statement from the company said, “At the Ordinary and Extraordinary Shareholders’ Meeting, shareholders approved today (May 28), almost unanimously, the resolution to change the company’s name from Total to TotalEnergies, thereby anchoring its strategic transformation into a broad energy company in its identity. In tandem with this name change, TotalEnergies is adopting a new visual identity.

Hitherto famous globally as an “oil giant”, TotalEnergies is now redefining its future and refocussing itself on low carbon energy including electricity, hydrogen, biomass and wind energies. It will however continue with its investments in oil and gas as well. In recent years, Total has positioned itself as a sustainability conscious company that is awake to the environment and sustainability in all its investments.

Patrick Pouyanné, chairman and chief executive officer of TotalEnergies, said: “Energy is life. We all need it and it’s a source of progress. So today, to contribute to the sustainable development of the planet facing the climate challenge, we are moving forward, together, towards new energies. Energy is reinventing itself, and this energy journey is ours. Our ambition is to be a world-class player in the energy transition. That is why Total is transforming and becoming TotalEnergies.”

The company said its new name and new visual identity embody the course it has resolutely charted for itself: “that of a broad energy company committed to producing and providing energies that are ever more affordable, reliable and clean.”

TotalEnergies nows wants to be known as “a broad energy company that produces and markets energies on a global scale: oil and biofuels, natural gas and green gases, renewables and electricity. ….we are committed to energy that is ever more affordable, clean, reliable and accessible to as many people as possible.”

TotaEnergies is active in more than 130 countries, employing over 100,000 people. In Uganda, it is the lead investor in the country’s King Fisher and Tilenga oil fields and their associated infrastructure- the refinery and crude oil pipeline.

Total was founded by French industrialist Ernest Mercier in 1924, and is today worth some US$200 billion.
