MV Sigulu ferry currently under construction by a Danish Company, JHG Marine in Masese in Jinja, will be ready for operation come November this year. The ferry owned by the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) will connect Namayingo district and Lolwe Islands on Lake Victoria.
The MV Sigulu, the biggest Ugandan ferry on L. Victoria has capacity to carry 300 passengers and 200 metric tonnes of goods. Constructed at a cost of Shs16 billion, it boasts facilities like a VIP Lounge, restaurant , medical and restrooms.
The ferry will open up the islands for opportunities including improving education, health, road infrastructure. The islands have been bedevilled by poor services owing to its hard to reach nature. With the ferry, road construction equipment can now be taken to the islands where feeder roads on the island can be fixed and cars can go to the island. Previously all cars were left on the mainland as people rode to the island on small engine boats.
JGH is no foreigner to constructing ferries for Uganda. They have in the past constructed MV Ssesse which plies Ssesse Islands, for Kalangala Infrastructure Services. They also made MV Kyoga connecting Namasole and Nakasongola. They also constructed and supplied 3 tours boats for the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
