ILF Consulting Engineers Austria GmbH (ILF) has been awarded a contract to serve as the Implementation Engineer for the 44.7MW Muzizi HPP to be developed by Uganda Electricity Generation Company Ltd (UEGCL) located on River Muzizi in the districts of Kibaale, Kyenjonjo, Kabarole and Ntorooko. The project has got full support of Government of Uganda (GoU) through Ministry of Finance Planning and Economic Development (MoFPED) and Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD).
The 3,959,771 EUR Contract between UEGCL and ILF that was signed on Friday 14th August 2015 at UEGCL’s Head Office in Nakasero will be financed from the 4 Million EUR KfW Grant to the project.
Muzizi Hydro Power Project 44.7MW
The Muzizi Hydro Power project is to be implemented as a Public Project and financed under the Mutual Reliance Initiative, with KfW German Development Bank (4million Euro grant plus 40million Euro as a concessional loan), Agency for French Development (AFD 45 Million Euro as a concessional loan) and approximately 21 million Euro funding from GoU.
The project is located along River Muzizi about 6km upstream of Lake Albert on the south-eastern side in the District of Kibaale. The project foot prints however extend to Kabarole, Kyenjojo and Ntoroko districts in the western part of Uganda. Ground breaking for the 44.7MW project is expected in 2016 and construction will commence after identifying the EPC contractor.
When completed around 2019, Muzizi HPP is expected to generate an average of 220GWh/year, equivalent to the power demand of more than 60,000 households.
The power generated from Muzizi HPP will be fed into the national grid via the proposed Hoima-Fort portal-Nkenda 220kV transmission line and also contributing to the stability of the grid in that part of the Country.
Environmental and Social issues of the project
The project has taken care of all the environmental issues and appropriate mitigation measures will be undertaken. All the project affected persons will be compensated as per the agreed and approved compensation report by the Chief Government Valuer.
The project will consider some of the social issues like providing employment to the local people, improving in areas of water supply, access roads, health centers, schools etc. The project will work closely with the local leaders, NGOs, CBOs and any other organized community based organizations.
