In a bid to bolster its leadership, deepen its presence and partnerships in the region, Danish logistics giant, A.P. Moller – Maersk has appointed a managing director for its East Africa operation.
Maersk is considered the logistics leader in East Africa across the three parameters of container shipping, port operation and integrated logistics. In all these areas, it powers ahead of rivals – Swiss the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), French CMA CGM, and Chinese COSCO. Its extensive network, covering 130 countries, with a global fleet of over 700 vessels and advanced digital innovations, gives it a competitive edge in supply chains. Two years ago, MSC acquired Bollore Logistics that was another key player in East Africa.
In 2021, Maersk acquired
- LF Logistics, onboarding with it its significant warehousing capabilities, which has further strengthened ability to provide customers in the region with integrated logistics solutions.
The appointment of Tito Okuku, a Kenyan national, and an old hand in logistics in the region will see Maersk embolden its operations in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
“Tito brings over 25 years of leadership experience in logistics and supply chain, having successfully led teams and operations across multiple African markets. With an extensive background in strategy, business development, warehousing, landside operations, and fleet management, he is uniquely positioned to lead Maersk’s Eastern Africa business into its next growth phase,” Adhish Alawani, Maersk Media Relations Manager, said in a May 16, press release.
“In his position,” he said, “Tito will be responsible for Maersk’s commercial business in countries such as Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, among several others in the Eastern Africa region.”
Tito Okumu previously served as managing director of APM Terminals Kenya (Great Lakes Ports) in 2014. Maersk said his return to its fold underlines the company’s commitment to strong local leadership, deep market knowledge and customer-centric innovation.
“Tito’s appointment marks an exciting chapter for our Eastern Africa business. His proven track record, hands-on knowledge of the region and passion for developing people make him the right leader to drive sustainable growth and deliver continued value to our customers. We are confident that Maersk will deepen its presence and partnerships in Eastern Africa under his leadership.” The release further said.
